Free Online Conference on Web 2.0

The Knowledge Bank online conference out of Australia this year is focused on Web 2.0 in education: what it is, how it’s being used today and its potential to radically change education.

Steve Hargadon will be giving the keynote address on why "Web 2.0 Is the Future of Education."

General Conference Information

Topic: Learning in a changing world - Web 2.0 and beyond
When: Six sessions held over July 21 and 23 2008 (depending on time zone!)
Where: Online in Elluminate
Sign Up: The conference is free but you need to Sign Up.

Abstract

Web 2.0 is not new - many of us have used social networking sites like YouTube, TeacherTube and Facebook. We know about Wikipedia, Skype and podcasting. We read, even write, and comment on blogs. But what might happen to education as Web 2.0 becomes mainstream?

* Introducing Web 2.0. Who are you? Where have I met you before?
* How can reading and writing a blog change your way of learning?
* How does a direct connection with an expert shift your relationship to knowledge?
* Who are the content experts?
* What skills should we be teaching to young people, and what can we learn from them?

Who should attend?

Primary and secondary school teachers, education policy officers, researchers, further education professionals and other educators - anybody interested in Web 2.0 and education.

Linkage: Web Predator Myths, Twitter & Oprah

Virtual WWII Exhibit:
The online collection features items and stories selected from a collection of World War II materials housed at the Lee Library at Brigham Young University.

Teens are already totally wired, so it's natural that teens will use their mobile devices as a way to connect with the brands they love. And advertisers are all too happy to oblige.

Why Web 2.0 Isn't Relevant for the (Education) Masses...Yet

Forrester Research analyst Charlene Li spends her time between two worlds: the early adopter Web 2.0 crowd and the broader business users who don't quite get them.

Here, she explains why all that Facebook-MySpace-Twitter-Digg excitement aside, most of the world just doesn't find Web 2.0 relevant and what entrepreneurs need to do to fix that.

MashupEdu : The New Digital Pedagogy

Dr. Mercedes Fisher and I just finished a new book chapter titled "Pedagogical Mashup: Social Media, Gen Y and Digital Learning Styles" that will be published early next year.

I'll have more details in a future post, but in the meantime I wanted to share the bounty of resources we culled together for the article.

We've saved the links for all the resources and references cited in the book chapter over on the social bookmarking tool del.icio.us, which you can find here: http://del.icio.us/mashup.edu

If you have any questions, or know of a great Education 2.0 resource that we should include, let us know!

Get the Pulse on Totally Wired Teens

Twtour Anastasia Goodstein is an award-winning blogger and expert on how American tweens, teens and twentysomethings use technology. She is also the creative genius behind the Ypulse blog and Ypulse Mashup conferences (including the Tween Mashup in NYC this month).

Most recently she is the author of a book about teens and technology called Totally Wired: What Teens and Tweens are Really Doing Online.

In her book Anastasia explores what Gen Y is doing on the Internet and with social media and mobile technology. She also delves into issues around cyberbullying, MySpace (and other social networks), as well as how all this technology is impacting schools and educators.

Anasatasia, thanks to the folks over at Proctor & Gamble, is going on a fall book tour. In addition to being incredibly knowledgeable in how teens are using technology, she is also keenly aware of how technology is being (or not) integrated in the classroom to support these burgeoning digital learning styles.

From personal experience, I can tell you that Anastasia is an engaging and interesting speaker who has the ability to explain (in real English, not geek speak!) how teens use technology, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of their total immersion in technology.

If you have the opportunity to hear her speak, please do so! You'll be glad you did.
