Domain Nonsense - A Logic Free Zone

As we said earlier we have been having domain issues, and in talking with others I know we are not alone. It's been a nightmare trying to untangle the mess and just when we thought we were out of the darkness it seems now our archived files are not working at all. We are working on it, so please bear with us.

In the meantime..... I came across this video session recently on Awakening Creativity I wanted to share...

Helping develop students’ creativity is a hard task, finding time for students to do a creative activity is an even harder task for teachers. Teachers often leave this task undone hoping students will find their own creative outlet. However, not all students around the world have ample opportunities to use their creativity, to be challenged to think outside the box or think upside down. Sometimes teachers can make room in the busy day by simply providing a quiet time, along with a stimulating idea, or a challenge to awaken their dormant creativity and give students have the freedom to create.

An easy way for teachers to awaken creativity is to have their students keep a design journal to quickly sketch ideas wherever they are, whenever. Teachers can also start their teaching day by giving the students a quote to draw visually, or simply a “word” for students to visually illustrate, then provide a few quiet minutes for students to create in their design journal. It’s a great way to stimulate students thinking early in the morning.

The future won’t be a world of rote memorization tests; but rather a world where the successful students will be ones who have had chance to awaken their creativity.

2008 PBwiki Program for Educators

"PBwiki knows that budgets are going to be tight, and we don’t want a lack of funds to deter educators from using collaborative technologies like wikis with their students.

To this end, PBwiki is giving each teacher or librarian who signs up as part of the program between August 18 and November 31, a free premium wiki (regular price: $250/year).

For example, if you sign up for a free wiki on November 1, you would receive a premium upgrade that lasts until October 31, 2009. Each fall, PBwiki plans to offer additional programs that will let participants retain their premium status free of charge."

You can learn more and sign up for the program by clicking here.

Get the Pulse on Totally Wired Teens

Twtour Anastasia Goodstein is an award-winning blogger and expert on how American tweens, teens and twentysomethings use technology. She is also the creative genius behind the Ypulse blog and Ypulse Mashup conferences (including the Tween Mashup in NYC this month).

Most recently she is the author of a book about teens and technology called Totally Wired: What Teens and Tweens are Really Doing Online.

In her book Anastasia explores what Gen Y is doing on the Internet and with social media and mobile technology. She also delves into issues around cyberbullying, MySpace (and other social networks), as well as how all this technology is impacting schools and educators.

Anasatasia, thanks to the folks over at Proctor & Gamble, is going on a fall book tour. In addition to being incredibly knowledgeable in how teens are using technology, she is also keenly aware of how technology is being (or not) integrated in the classroom to support these burgeoning digital learning styles.

From personal experience, I can tell you that Anastasia is an engaging and interesting speaker who has the ability to explain (in real English, not geek speak!) how teens use technology, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of their total immersion in technology.

If you have the opportunity to hear her speak, please do so! You'll be glad you did.

Schwab Learning: Resources for Kids with Learning Challenges

Schwab Learning Foundation is a philanthropic foundation set up by Charles and Helen Schwab dedicated to providing resources, information, and research on learning difficulties. They also have a Spanish language mirror site.

Schwab Learning is chock full of important resources to help parents connect, identify learning difficulties, along with strategies for working with the education system. Be sure to check out the vast collection of videos, books, and articles in their digital library.

In addition, Schwab Learning has developed an online community called Spark Top where children with various types of learning difficulties can connect and discover their "unique ways of learning, develop their strengths and self-esteem, and discover strategies to succeed in and out of school.

Spark Top provides a safe place for kids to interact, share their worries, concerns and successes, and get feedback from kids just like them."

I highly recommend both Schwab Learning and Spark Top to teachers, parents or anyone who works with children with learning challenges. Be sure to check out the SparkTop teachers resources too. There isn't a "one size fits all" learning style. We are complex creatures and we all learn in different ways.

Thanks to Lisa and Pearl for introducing me to the wonderful array of resources they provide to children, parents, and educators. If you have any questions--drop them a line! These are wonderful people who have dedicated their careers to helping children with learning difficulties.
